Ning Bo Dumplings

Yuyuan Garden is a famous classical garden in Shanghai. Although the existence of this garden is about 400 years now and undergoes multiple reconstructions, this place still remains as a famous tourist spot in Shanghai.

Sometime I felt amaze on the architecture of ancient times. It seems like they really spend a lot of time building, reconstructing, refurbishing and try to preserve the crisp of the culture. Technically, we should embrace our history but the remains turn out to be so good for photography.

Maybe I sound a bit melodramatic but as a newbie in the world of camera, ancient buildings turn me on. This is just one of the many buildings in this garden. If you have good stamina, you can walk the 20 000 square meters park, within a day. I am fit (or I wanted to believe that), so, no problem for me.

There are 6 main scenic areas that you must visit: Sansui Hall, Wanhua Chamber, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, Yuhua Hall and Inner Garden. I went there twice and I don’t think I ever visited those places or maybe I did but forget the names.

To me, the main attraction is not those scenic spots. I have discovered Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant, the most famous and authentic siu long pau. Now, I also discovered the best dumplings in Shanghai called Ning Bo Dumplings (don’t know where they get the name from).

This restaurant is usually congested and probably you need to spend some time queuing to get seated and queuing to order and pay the bills. Maybe this place is the most affordable as compare to others? To me, crowded means good.. hehe..

As you might notice, they do serve big pau and some other dim sum too but the highlight is definitely the rice ball dumplings. Instead of ordering one, the long queue makes me order additional bowl. The sesame and crab roe dumplings.

In Singapore Chinatown, you can get this with almond or just plain sugar water soup. Over here, they only serve with plain water as the soup. In that case, the soup is like drinking hot water. On the other hand, the dumplings taste very nice and the texture is just perfect.

Two bowls are definitely not enough for me especially on good food. As soon as you walk out from the restaurant, you will notice that they also sell take away dumplings. I did not get it but I think it is a good deal. According to the lady, it can last about 3 weeks without fridge.

I am not leaving that place empty handed. I bought myself herbal bean curds with pigeon eggs. No, it is not stinky bean curd. This also taste good except a little spicy. Gosh, you should try to drink the soup too. Now, my floor is wet coz I can’t stop drooling when I write about this.

Long Feng Dim Sum

Another day another dollar earns. I guess it is slightly different in my case as to me, another day another day another dollar spend.

Every day, I will be thinking on how I would like to spend my money wisely, what to buy and what to eat. Of course the favourite part is eating what I plan for.

While walking in Super Brand Mall, Shanghai, my stomach gave me a red alert and my mission turned out to be hunting for a place to refill myself.

On 8th floor, which I always think is a lucky floor, I found Long Feng Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant that serves morning dim sum starting at 11 am?

The place is rather quiet when I arrived but it started to gradually filled up with customers especially during lunch time. As much as I normally treat dim sum as breakfast, this time I called it brunch.

Started slowly with custard bun and later followed with small dragon pau as my starter. Maybe I was hungry or maybe the food was really good but my refilling needs more substances.

The waitress somehow acknowledged that and started to introduce their famous signature dumplings to me. Beside prawn dumplings, I did go for chef recommendations.

The dim sums are good and comparable with many Malaysia dim sums but lacking of one thing, the sweet and chilli sauce. Yes, you can dip in soy sauce but I still think it tastes better with sweet sauce.

Whenever I go for dim sum, I will automatically order chee cheong fun (I ordered 2 plates .. hehe) and deep fried spring rolls. The feeling is incomplete if I eat it. How weird isn’t it?

If 10 is good, I will only rank this place as 7. Not because the food is not good but minus 1 for no sweet sauce, minus 1 for start at 11 and minus 1 for too expensive. I actually paid RMB 137 for this “brunch” :(

Guihua Lou

People are never satisfied. When you have something you complain, when you don’t, you complain. I guess this is what people call human nature.

The last time I check I am still a human, so I guess I cannot avoid from the fact that I do complain once in a while. I used to complain about Chinese Food until I am here.. a place that makes me pork-free for almost 3 weeks now.

Looking back, I did actually spent a great time in China, Shanghai in particular. Old photos remind me of this Gui Hua Lou Restaurant in Shangri-la Pudong.

Now, I hardly even see any oriental food within my vicinity. Although this restaurant is just another Chinese Restaurant.. it reminds me of my root, a Chinese one :P where dim sum should be my breakfast.

I miss this fried spring roll and century egg porridge every morning. I tried to order porridge here but guess what, the hotel serves me with oatmeal porridge instead of rice porridge, how sad :( .

Believe it or not, I hardly find soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce. If this continues, I guess I will start writing on my travel instead of food. Or worse, you don’t get to read my post anymore as I might starve to death here.

It doesn’t matter if the char siu pau or siu long pau is good here but I can tell you it is a lot better than most of places I have been. I wonder when I will get a chance to go back to this restaurant again.

Try to put yourself in position with no pork and alcohol free for 3 weeks. It is rather torturing. The feeling is like pregnant lady who are craving for certain food. Ohh I never pregnant before but I have big belly that the effect is almost the same.

Aww.. looking at this porcupine custard bun shows how creative and insensitive a human can be,  creative because the chef can creates a miracle with scissors on pau and insensitive because his customer is an animal lover.

If you are cruel enough to take the first bite, the sandy custard blood of porcupine is melted in your mouth.  I tried it for sure and kept the other two as souvenirs :P

Chee cheong fun with big prawns or char siew is my all time favourite. When it serves with a glass of Chinese tea, just makes the breakfast as wonderful as it can be.

With RMB 163.30 (~RM 80), you are completely ready to start your wonderful days ahead. Slap by reality now, I have to figure out what I need to order for my breakfast, not bread and butter again :(

Conrad La Superieur

As many might know, my initial Christmas plan is to travel to Hong Kong Disneyland to fulfill my childhood dream. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I re-routed my destination to Hangzhou instead.

So yea, please don’t ask me anything about Hong Kong and the whole long to-do list that I have to put on hold now. Thanks to THE hotel that cancel my booking last minutes.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Despite not be able to physically visit Hong Kong, White Snake movie by Jet Li bring me to Hangzhou for what I consider as second prize.

I might not be able to pull Mr. Mickey’s ear or molests Little Mermaid, but I still get to try out Cantonese dim sum in this classy hotel-alike restaurant called Conrad La Superieur.

The waitresses have quite a simple job as all they need to do are just passing around paper menu and pencil to me and that’s all. I have to do all the ticking and waving before they attended to you again.

No one actually pushing the dim sum trolley as what shown in TV, THAT is the downside. But hey, they served egg tarts and phoenix claws too, just like any other dim sum place that I have been.

All the dim sums are served hot, I mean really hot. More like the chef only cooks when you order it. So if you ordered custard bun, or ha kau (shrimp dumplings) like what I did, it might take slightly longer than you thought.

Maybe because the dim sum is freshly made, the texture and taste are well preserved. Of course, it is another sign for you to order more too.

Beside char siu pau which I think is quite common, they served pretty good deep dried spring rolls. The spring roll itself is nothing special but after you dip in homemade vinegar sauce, I bet you will want more.

Maybe I should try to fry something and dip in vinegar. Who knows, it might turns out to be good too. If it does, I can make a business out of it.. If doesn’t, well it will still end up in toilet bowl.

Now comes my favorite dish.. a dish that hardly goes wrong. Chee cheong fun it is. Not that I like chee cheong fun but I love the soy sauce gravy. Yum yum..This is really satisfying..

In total, I ordered much more than that. So, I ended up paying a fortune before I leave. This breakfast cost me about RMB 161 (~RM 80) but hey, if I stay here longer, I will go to this place again for sure.

Macau Street, World Trade Center, Beijing

Not many people noticed my blog rarely post about food anymore. Why? i) I am on diet plan ii) Many restaurants in China forbid the use of camera iii) Most food are way beyond what Malaysian’s taste buds can take.

No matter what the challenges are, I can still find needle in the haystack. I break my diet plan in preparation for winter (fat building), sneak in my wife, iPhone and continuously hunt for good food.

Despite many failures, I was destined to Macau Street. It is not in Hong Kong and it is not a street but a decent restaurant in the middle of World Trade Center, Beijing.

As usual, you really need to get to the bottom for great pleasure. I am not talking about 18sx stuff here. What I am trying to say is, this restaurant is located under the World Center and dining in here will give you a great satisfaction.

Quality of food is normally gauged by the number of customers. Well, at least that is how I determined which restaurant to go to when in foreign places. This one is crowded.

Sniff sniff, yea.. it is Hong Kong’s style cuisine. Dim sums such as “phoenix claws”, custard bun, chee cheong fun etc are common here. All are good except wanton noodles soup which tastes slightly plain as compared to what we normally have in Malaysia.

Ohh..Mushroom Pork with Sesame Walnuts is highly recommended. Just by thinking about it makes me drool.

One night I dreamt of eating char siu, siu yok, and pak cham kai. Maybe I was away fromMalaysiafor too long but I woke up craving for it.

Luckily this restaurant served all three at the same time. The dish is served with 3 types of dip sauces; assam, garlic, soy sauce. So, instead of 3, I get to try 3 x 3 different tastes all together.

No one should leave the restaurant unless you try the Yin Yong (drink made by mixing coffee and tea). I am not too impressed with the taste of it but I have alternate drinks.

Oh yea.. Red Bean Yin Yong. Mixing red bean + coffee + tea are actually perfect combinations. The tastes are self compromising to each other and this makes the drink very special.

Jin Xuan Hong Kong Dim Sum

How many of you still remember what happen on 1 July 1997? Don’t tell me young people like you forget this auspicious day? This date marks the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from UK to China.

Mass migration or better known as migration tide happened even before 1989 as many were pessimistic towards Hong Kong future. That is the time when receiving countries enjoy the exchange of cultures, expertise and FOOD.

Now, you don’t have to travel all the way to Hong Kong but to SS22/19 instead to eat Hong Kong dim sum. Many of you might know this place, Restoran Jin Xuan Hong Kong Dim Sum.

If you go during breakfast, lunch or dinner time, this place is so congested that you might need to queue up. Quite a long queue tho. Normally in any restaurant, the queue is proportionate to the quality of food. The longer it is the better it is.

STOP Drooling! Well, I am not sure about you but my saliva nearly drool out when I look at varieties of pre-made dim sums that are available. Maybe I am too hungry.. hehe.. Since I am so hungry, I have to remind myself not to overly ordered :P

Only fried food? Nah.. these are just few of the many other choices. I spotted on many that I am craving for even before looking into the menu.

If you know me in person, you know that I am bad with names. I cannot even remember pretty girls’ names sometime. Sad isn’t it? So, please don’t expect me to name what I ate that day. I guess I am good at one thing, FEEDING my FAT!

If you are custard bun lover, please don’t hesitate but order this straight away. As much as I like custard bun in Dragon-i @ Pavillion, KL, I think this is also another example of deliciously yummie custard bun.

Another dim sum that I like most is the bacon meat rolls. I love this straight away as what TikkoSS’s said “Love at first bite!”.

There are few other dim sums that I ordered and I can tell you the dim sums here really have a good standard. I cannot recall how much I spent that day but I managed to capture few of the dim sums price as below:

Century Egg Congee RM3.50

Deep Fried Prawn Roll RM3.50

Cabbage Roll RM 3.50

Deep Fried Radish Cake RM3.50

Char Siu Pastry RM3.50

Chee Cheong Fun RM4.80

Scallop and Prawn Dumpling RM4.00

Marmite Pork Rib RM10.00

I think it is quite reasonable considering the dim sums range from RM 3.50 to RM 10. You don’t have to stuff yourself with quantity but I prefer quality food. I share so that you can try it too!

Canton-i @ Sunway Pyramid

Recently, “i” is very famous. I bet you know about iPod, iTunes, iTouch and iPhone. I am not sure what “i” stands for but many believe that it is an abbreviation for “intelligent” but it can also be “idiot” :p.

If you remember that I wrote about Dragon-i @ Pavillion, KL before, now I am going to write about Canton-i. Yes, both are equally well known and both have the famous “i” too. Hehe. If Dragon-i is famous with Shanghai Cuisine, Canton-i is famous with Hong Kong Cuisine.

What so special about this restaurant? I don’t know, really but what I do know is I need a place to grab a quick lunch. To me, all these franchise served very decent food and the quality is well maintained too.

When come to this place, I am expecting a certain standard on their service and not to mention the restaurant ambience too. If the place is below my expectation, probably you will never see from me again. I am a man with standard, remember?

Like I just said, this is a quick lunch so please don’t expect many fancy dishes from me this time. You know I do have bottomless stomach but sometimes, I do grab a quick bite. Might be only sandwiches (nah don’t really like sandwiches) or donuts.

I ordered Stew Yee Mee, custard bun and Fu Chok Roll. Personally, I like this stew Yee Mee very much. It is best served when it is still hot as the noodles will get slightly dry and salty after it gets colder. Is that a scallop? Yes it is. The main ingredient is BIG BIG scallop beside shitake mushroom, carrot and broccoli.

Custard bun is my all time favorite. When you take the first bite, the sensation of warm custard melting my mouth is heavenly. This is comparable with custard bun in Dragon-i @ Pavillion, KL despite the purple color is a bit of a turn off.

Fu Chook Roll is another dim sum that I usually ordered but surprisingly the Fu Chok roll over here is not every impressive. Edible, taste ok but I expect something better. Call me fussy but I still finish it tho :P

One thing that I like about this place is the dragon fruit juice. It is not ice blended but I called it ice crushes. Not too sweet, not too diluted and it is just fantabulous. I would have order for two glasses if I have to :)

I paid about RM 79 for this meal. Expensive? I think it is slightly on the expensive side but hey, BIG SCALLOPS wor, 2 baskets of custard bun wor, Fu Chok Roll wor and of course my favorite Dragon Fruit Juice WOR! I will come back again for sure, will you?

Jogoya Japanese Buffet

Hey, I am hungry! Let’s go and eat? Where?? Anywhere.  What do you plan to eat? Anything. That is a typical conversation that I encounter almost every time when my stomach is paging.. growl growl..

This time I need not worry about it. A few bloggers invited me to Jogoya – Japanese Buffet Restaurant @ Starhill KL. Over here, you can get a broad range of cuisines ranging from Japanese, Chinese, Western, Malaysian and a lot of other styles.

If you are thinking of dieting, forget about it ! The diverse choices of dishes, the freshness of food and the delicate desserts will convince you to eat MORE and MORE.

On top of that, the highest quality and PORK FREE dishes are simply irresistible.

Don’t drool when you see this? I said it because I nearly drool when I spotted on sushi and sashimi. They serve free flow of Salmon, Tuna, Mackeral, Squid, Octopus, Butter Fish, Oyster and Abalone etc.

Sometime the queue can be a little long but I can assure you that it is worth waiting. If you are a fan of sushi, you will find many weird choices of sushi here too. !

Seafood lovers? You don’t need to go to smelly WET market or diving in deep blue sea now. You are free to order crab, prawn, fish, shell fish and many more. All you need to do is just picking a big plate and start selecting.

The seafood are Pre-cook? Nah.. The seafood will only be cooked when you order it. This is to maintain the freshness and quality of the dishes. So, you have a say on how you want it to be done.

Like I said earlier, this restaurant also serves Chinese and Western style dishes. Sharkfin soup is a must but I also spotted dim sum and herbal soup. Not only that, there are too many Chinese vege and meat dishes for me to choose from.

Don’t know which one to choose? Don’t decide too fast ! Western corner serves Spaghetti, steak, lamb chop and many more..  hahaha.. now you are confuse on what to eat right? That is exactly what I have in mind at that time.

I am sure you are interested in what I ordered. This time I will not tell you how I like the food but will let you decide instead. How? Some say picture represents a thousand words.. hehe..

Sashimi is a must ! Sushi is a must too but it ended up in my stomach before I even take out my camera (so no photos) :P . Osyter and scallop are also part of my starter. The crab is a disguise. I didn’t eat it but Xing did.

How to maximize your cash out with food input when you come to buffet? I didn’t eat breakfast, lunch, dinner SINCE yesterday and clean your digestive system.. hahaha.. I am just kidding lol. I’m not that cheapskate,ok?

Let’s see, got lobster, scallops, sea cucumber, crab, abalone, some fish, lamb etc. I bet the question that playing in your head is, do I have diarrhea the next day? The answer is NO.

Personally, I wouldn’t say that all the food is nice but that is normal isn’t it? I like some and don’t like some. I particularly favor the cheesy scallop and the LOBSTER!

Did you see 2 pretty girls there? I mean they look good from that angle. Dark, blocked by hair.. wait wait wait.. Who are they? I don’t know.. hehe .. what I am trying to say is they have to earn their drinks. KNOCK THE COCONUT.

That is really new to me. I literally need to take a hammer and knock a hole before I get to drink it. I drank 5 coconuts in total. Not because I like it but I like the knocking part. Hehe..

Tai Thong Odeon Restaurant

Recently, our world is experiencing economy crisis. Recently? A bit superannuated don’t you think?  Hmm.. but we are still undergoing the after effect until now.

Credit card becomes a popular device that can be a lifesaver on the rainy days or bane to your life. I am not in debt but enjoying the privilege of the rebate and gift voucher instead. Smart isn’t it?

Last week, I received RM 50 cash voucher from CIMB which led me to Tai Thong for a wonderful Dim Sum breakfast. Is it enough? Nah.. please expect  to be slightly more expensive than Restoran EDEN Dim Sum City.

Big eater like me has its own disadvantage when comes to dim sum. Don’t ask me why, ok? The portion is simply too small :( .

So, I take the honor to order Char Siew (barbecued pork), Siew Yok (Roasted Pork), fried mushroom, fried carrot cake, stew pork and spring roll to fill my stomach.

Let’s see. I like most of the dishes that I ordered but those are just the side orders. Not really the dim sum tho.

Now is the dim sum time. I ordered custard bun, fried yam, hark kau (prawn), fried prawn roll and chee cheong fun (rice noodle roll). Is that all? Er.. not really.. some already in my stomach before I snap the photos :) .

The custard bun here is not so impressive. I still prefer custard bun in Dragon-i @ Pavillion, KL. The har kow and fried prawn roll taste great with big juicy prawns. The char siew chee cheong fun with light soy sauce tastes as good as many chee cheong fun that I tried before.

What I like most is the fried yam. On the outside is the crispy yam skin and on the inside is filled with pork.  PORK? Oh yea.. you know my favorite dish is always related to pork, right :P ?.

After minus RM 50, I still need to pay approximately RM 60 for this meal. You can say it is quite pricy but I finished all the dishes and dim sum I ordered with 2 other friends. It is really satisFATing!

Kedai Kopi Mee Bon

If you are Chinese, I am very sure you know what is Pau. For non chinese, Pau is almost the same like mantou. OMG. I am answering a question with another questions. What is Pau? What is mantou? Pau is a white bread or bun like with fillings while mantou is just the bread. It is a tradisional Chinese cuisine that you will mostly see people eat during breakfast.

Many places do sell Pau with various fillings starting from pork, red bean, lotus paste, kaya etc. Nowadays, Pau is so famous that many are factory made, halal and you can even find instant pau in supermarket. Question is, does it tastes good?

After a long searching, I finally manage to find tradisional home made pau in Kepong. This place is called Kedai Kopi Mee Bon. It is by the roadside and normally filled with customers on the corridor/walkway. This is a typical chinese place for breakfast, serving with hot drinks, dim sum, pau, and of course with lou mai kai (glutanious rice with soy chicken) too.

As you can see, this place is very busy especially in the morning and during tea breaks. The pau is freshly made everyday and they are steamed with conventional ratten basket.  You can dine here with hot pau or you can buy the cold pau so that you can steam them up later. What I like most about the pau here is, the filling is a lot and the pau skin is very soft. I prefer Char Siew Pau and normally I eat few at the same time.

The menu is hanging infront of the shops with the pricelist. Pretty simple but smart way to display the menu. The dim sum is ranging from RM 3.20 to RM 3.70 per plate. The normal red bean pau is RM 1.60, Big Pau (different from char siew pau in terms of the filling) is RM 3.50, Char Siew Pau is RM 1.80 and shang yok pau (3 layers pork pau) is RM 1.80.
