Bedok Food Stalls

How old do you plan to retire? Many will said, “Do I look that old?” To me, retiring is not about sitting there waiting to die but rather quit from your daily responsibilities and do what you want.

Of course you need to get financial independence first. In other words, escape yourself from becoming a slave for money. Question is how? My concept is, instead of savings cents by cents, earn more more more than what you can EVER use.

Rich dad or wife is an alternative but unfortunately, I am not that lucky :( but hey, money is never enough anyway.

Rather than dwelling too much on what I don’t have, why not just flip the coins, see what I want to do about it. OK. I plan to physically retire in Singapore. Not because I like the ‘fine’ country but I love the food there!

Because of Bedok Hawker Stalls, I will re-consider Singapore again. Why? Foods here are deliciously nice and affordable. For instance, chee cheong fun and Jian Bo Shui Kueh cost less than SGD 5 (~RM 10).

That secures my daily breakfast. What about lunch? All I need is to spend another SGD 5 (~RM 10) and I can get decent lunch such as lemon chicken rice, kuey chap or duck rice. I have tested all and the foods are highly recommended.

With that, I am not going to live in poverty or resorting in something not decent as all these foods are my favorites! Who say I must eat steaks or bird nest on every meal?

When clock strikes 3pm, maybe I can plan to have a short tea break. Over here, I get to order lek tau suan (green pea soup), lotus seed soup, or even tou fu fah. Tou fu fah is common but lek tau suan or lotus seed soups are hardly find in other places.

So, did you get it yet?

The fundamental rule to achieve financial independence is to have a simple life. All you need is getting a decent shelter (not in dodgy place) and securing your stomach (not with bird nest) AND you are a step closer to your retirement.

(don’t act smart by asking what about dinner and supper! That you have to figure it out youself :p)

Wing Heong – The Best Char Siu, Siu Yok, Siu Kai Ever !

Few days ago, while dating my dreamgirl, all of the sudden the dream turned wild. I know what you are thinking. No..not turning into WET but it turned into terrified horror when I appear to be a victim of drought and famine.

Guess what, in a split second, char siu, siu yok and siu kai dropped from the sky like in the movie Meatballs. Maybe I watch too many movies but the point is, I woke up craving for all these siu siu siu rice.

Reality slapped me when I realized that I am in the middle of Chinaland. So, how to ease my craving? No choice but to flip back at all my photos and I found this place. This is the closest I can get.

Kedai Makanan Wing Heong is always the right choice. Not only it cans fill your stomach easily when you are there physically but it also can ease your cravings when you are not there! Don’t be surprise what you can get in this small hawker stalls.

Cockroaches? Unhygienic place? No no.. this place is surprisingly decent. I will not use the word clean but it is free from ‘uninvited’ small crawling creatures and at least my stomach did not reject the food after that.

Some people have no money to buy a decent food. In my case, I am not rich but I cannot get decent food now even I have some money. This place is definitely affordable. With only about RM 3.50 – RM 9, you can get a lifetime experience to eat the tastiest siu yok or siu kai or char siu freshly chop for you.. imagine that !

Seafood?? Unfortunately this is not a seafood place. Too bad..However, this place serves very delicious assamfish. I might be slightly bias when I said this but I prefer assamfish here as compare to Restoran Peng Heong Hakka Paikut.

On top of that, they also serve “dan tong”. That time, I tried the chicken “sayong choi tong”. Ok.. don’t be critical on me as I don’t know how to translate all these in English. Besides, even if you speak English to them, I doubt they will know.

Both the BBQ chicken and pork are my all favorite here. It is nicely cooked and the chicken is slightly soft and tendery. Not over cook of course as I can still taste the juicy pork. The roasted pork is a must try. The texture is good and I particularly love the crispy skins.

You can call me pork lover but I don’t think I can survive a day without pork. That is why my plan on becoming a vegetarian is just a wishful thinking and never materializes. Food is excellent, price is affordable except slightly warm and definitely worth to give it a try when you are around the vicinity.

Korean Subway + Mini Custard Bun

Genghis Khan used to travel thousand miles with horses. In ancient world, horse was considered as one of the fastest means to move from one location to another. Horse riders were considered as elite, who are mostly royalty, high rank generals, tycoon bla bla bla.

After 21 century, the world has evolved. Horse race turns out to be one of the famous gambling sports for many walks of life. Beside equestrian and turf club, no one travels with horse anymore and if you do, you are definitely the odd one out.

That is why TikkoSS decided to travel by plane or subway instead of horse. Ancient people only carry a small sling bag but TikkoSS normally carry the whole house to travel. 35 kg of baggage allowance definitely not enough.

Travelling solely by plane of course cannot get me to my destination. Most of the time, I will rely on taxi but in Korea, subway is really convenient. Almost every single tourist attraction areas can be reached by subway.

Call me techy freak but I am so impressed with Korea subway system. Nothing unusual about the subway itself as it is just a merely train. The automated ticketing machines are rather very advanced.

If you have big notes, there is a bill exchanger. If you don’t read Korea language, the ticketing machines are capable to communicate with you in various major languages. After reaching your destination, simply slot the ticket in deposit refund machine and you will get back your 1000 won.

When I travel, I find it challenging to get local subway map. It is either the map is outdated or I have to use my cam cam to snap the tourist map. So, to avoid the hassle, I have included the subway map for future reference.

IF you don’t know where to go, just grab this map and ask the concierge to circle the interesting place.  I can assure you that you will find many many interesting places. More than you can ever imagine.

That is not all. Korean Subway Station also full with hawker stalls. What they sell? Finger food of course. I managed to locate this stall that sell mini custard bun. It is almost the same like kaya balls except the filling is filled with custard.

If 10 is good, I will give 11. Why? By just thinking about it, I already started to drool. I can comfortably tell you that the mini custard buns really taste as good as the one I had it in Dragon-i @ Pavillion, KL.

If you bump into me in Korea Subway, don’t be surprise as I am always there to harass the ticketing machines and ease my mini custard bun crave..

Tai Poh Mee & Teochew Fishballs

When you are broke, I mean literally broke, you don’t need to beg for money or food. What you need to do is to dress up nicely and crash some wedding parties. That is what I consider as survival tips to feed your fat.

If really in desperate need and have little money with you, even RM 5 can make you full for one meal. Let me show you how. I discovered this place along Jalan Pudu recently. Typical hawker stall by the roadside that managed to put their footprints on local newspaper.

Of course many will say RM 5 can get almost anything but what if I tell you that this stall serves very nice Tai Poh Mee? Probably, the stall serves one of the best Tai Poh Mee around for only RM 5 (Big), Medium RM 4.60 (Medium) and RM 4.20 (Small).

I am positive that many will confuse this type of noodles with wantan mee simply because it is also served with wan tan too. The Tai Poh noodle is slightly thicker as compare to wan tan noodle and the taste is a lot different than typical wantan mee.

What I like about this noodle? Of course is the the minced pork in soy sauces.  Is it good? Hey, if this type of noodle is not impressive, do you think I will blog about it? Why not you give it a try and tell me how do you like it.

Once you try it, I bet many will say that the portion is slightly small for a big eater like me. Don’t fret, there is a famous Teochew Fishball stall here too. It was founded in 1952. Wow, older than me.

Please don’t complaint that you don’t have money as this is not expensive too. Only RM 4 for a single bowl with mixture of various types of meatballs, fishballs, fishcakes, dumplings etc or it will only costs about RM 4.50 for take away.

This photo is not photoshop. In fact almost all pictures in TikkoSS’s Blog are not photoshop too.  So, what you see is exactly what I ate that day. Deliciously tempting? That is exactly how I feel when I have it.

Bring RM 10 with you and you can enjoy both Tai Poh Mee and Teochew Fishballs. Yes, that is all you need, only RM 10.

Wing Tai Clayport Chicken Rice

When I say about chicken, what come to your mind? Prostitute? Or chicken rice?  If you think of prostitute, you are a freaking pervert. Please bleach your brain before you continue.

If you are thinking of chicken rice, YES, I have a wonderful suggestion for you. All you need is just prepare your stomach for a fulfilling dinner.

Initially, I am intending to have a light dinner as part of my diet plan. DIET Plan? Hahaha.. that is a joke. How can TikkoSS survive without food right? BUT I ended up in Wing Thai Claypot Chicken Rice.

When talk about hawker stall, please lower your expectation on ambience, décor, cleanliness etc. What you truly need are good food, cheaper price and lastly, no stomachache.

Technically this stall is by the roadside. So, be prepared to get a little wet when it is raining and gets a little warm on normal days.

This stall still cook claypot chicken rice by using traditional charcoal cooking method despite the stall is old and not appealing from the exterior. Every single bowl will only be prepared once you order it.

This restaurant also serves soups and vegetables. If you are craving for herbal soup, vegetables soup and chicken soup, you can order it separately. The price is ranging starting from RM 5 – RM 10.

How can I miss the soup, right? I decided to try this coconut herbal chicken soup. It looks very special to me because the soup is prepared inside the coconut. Don’t ask me what they include in there as I am not the expert in Chinese Herbs.

The soup is considered little due to the size of the coconut but it is very refreshing.  The chicken is soft and the soup is delicious. It tastes a little bit like coconut water + chicken soup. Hope my metaphor is truly reflected on the actual taste.

Salted fish, lap cheong (Chinese sosej) and chicken are the main ingredients. I know it looks deliciously tempting but don’t put into your mouth immediately or it will burn your tongue.

Every bite with salted fish and lap cheong make me wanting for more. I know if I ordered for one person portion, it will not be sufficient. So, I ordered 2 person portion instead.

Homemade herbal tea is nothing special and it only cost about RM 1.50.

Did I finish all? OF COURSE! I completely finished up the soup, rice and drink. This is a simple meal that cost me less than RM 20. Bottomless stomach maa.. hahaha… Will I come back again? Definitely!

Lorong Selamat Ikan Bakar

Global warming is the culprit if cold place getting colder and hot place getting hotter. In hot and warm country like Malaysia, air condition is preferred or you will be soaked with sweat.

Any exception? Definitely! Lorong Selamat Ikan Bakar is one of it. A non air-conditioned hawker stall with big fan only. Try it during noon and you will know how many packets of tissue you need :P .

Sweat? Then why here? The freshly grilled fish is the main reason why I am here despite hot and warm. Ohh.. before I forget, the parking here is a big problem. I would suggest to travel by using Putra LRT and get down at Dato Keramat station.

There are varieties of grilled fishes here. Kembong (Mackerel), cencaru (Torpedo Scad), pari(Stingray), tetuka(Baby Stingray), terubuk (River Herring), siakap (Baramudi or Asian Seabass), kerapu (Grouper) and bawal (Pomfret) are the choices.  The fishes are pre-marinated with turmeric and wrapped with banana leaves before grilling it.

Stingray is the only fish with cartilage and less bones so I decided to order it. I am like small kiddo right? Better be safe than get chocked later… hehe..

Most of the grilled fish are too dry and hard but this one, the meat is still soft and juicy. The marinated turmeric flavor together with the dip sauce makes me want to come back to this place again. Not to forget, the delicious chicken soup too.

How much do you think it will cost for a glass of pure fruit juice? I remember that I drank once in KLCC and it cost me about RM 10++. Not to mention it is a small glass and diluted. Over here, you only need to pay RM 5 for a big glass of pure mango drink.

Many asked me why I include empty plates in most of my food posts. No particular reason except to show that the food is really nice and I help the waitress to clean the plates :P

You might say that the price here is slightly expensive for hawker stall but I am willing to pay more if the quality of the food is above average. If you measure the portion, food quality and price, I am sure you will come again once you try it.

Hawker Stalls @ Gurney Drive

If you think that my tummy is filled after having food at Penang Char Kuey Teow @ Lorong Selamat and  Hawker Stalls @ Macalister Road, I can tell you straight to your face that you are wrong ! Do you know how much I spend to maintain my tummy every month? I can tell you it is a lot, a lot more than you can think off.

My stomach is bottomless ! So, if you decided to buy me a dinner, you better think twice or I will dry your wallet off. As usual, my diet plan fails again. hehe. How can I miss all the hawker stalls at Gurney Drive? No need to ask, the place is usually crowded till late at night.

If you are craving for assam laksa, loh bak, O – chien (fried osyter with eggs), lok lok (steamboat stick) etc, this is the place. As for me, that is not what I am looking for. Some “special” food of course.

Muo Chi or Ma Zhi (steam sticky flour with peanuts) is what I am looking for. Still remember about QQ Muo Chi @ Jalan Tanjung Dua? That muo chi is already upgraded with various flavors but this one is the original muo chi. There are few stalls that sell muo chi but this stall is my favorite among all.

The next stop is charcoal grilled cuttlefish. I know many dislike this but I love it. I only pay about RM 10 and the crispy cuttle fish is mine. It is best served with spicy dip sauce when it is still hot. This is probably one of the famous stalls in Gurney Drive as a lot of ‘big shots’ drop by to get the cuttlefish. (Yess.. I have the same taste as the big shots.. :P )

You must be wondering where are all the food photos and why I did not post it up.It is because both tastes so good that I finished them when on my way back to my table :P .. If you want, you can try them yourself. hehe..

Hawker Stalls @ Macalister Road

What did you do when you have some free time? Playing chess, reading or gardening? Gosh, so boring. Get a life ! I know you will curse me if your hobby happen to be one of those. As for me, I will do something to keep up with my tummy. (The other day, one auntie just said.. OMG.. you so fat now .. arrggghhh)

I can spend 5 hours drive to Penang (I am a turtle driver) just because I am craving for Penang food.  The place that I like most in Penang is Macalister Road. Probably about 15 min drive from Penang Bridge assuming that there are no traffic jams.

Macalister Road is not a super high class place but it fills with a lot of hawker stalls. Over here, you can find variety of very nice and famous food.

Everytime when I come to this place, there are few “must eat” food. Chee cheong fun, loh bak and ais kacang. Please don’t worry that they will slaughter you if you are not local because most of them are very reasonable. Some stalls even put up the pricing but of course if you speak Hokkien to them, you will get “better treatments”.

Let me tell you that this is not just an ordinary ais kacang. Have you try ais kacang with sarsaparilla (Sarsi) syrup  and cincau (grass jelly)? That’s why I said it is a “must eat” dessert. I am sure most of you are familliar with loh bak so I skip this and move to chee cheong fun. Have you try chee cheong fun with prawn paste? Taste weird? Nah.. it tastes yummie..

The journey to Penang is a bit torturing considering that I am a turtle driver but I only spent about RM 20 to feed my fat. Let me see if I can google the locations just incase you are as adventurous as me.
