Good Taste Bak Kut Teh Restaurant

Have you ever walk for about 1.5 hour to get a decent breakfast? I have to be clear here. I am not trying to go on diet or wake up “seven early eight early” (direct translation from Cantonese) for an exercise first before breakfast.

All I did was to save RM 15 taxi ride from my hotel to this place, Good Taste Bak Kut Teh Restaurant at Miri Centerpoint. Not trying to be stingy here but I thought that the distance is quite near until I actually experienced it.

Clean Chinese restaurant?  Yea, this is one of it. This restaurant is partially air conditioned. The kitchen is “see through” so you know what is going into ur food (I tried to steal some secret recipe but the mission fail.. too many secret ingredients in it)

Ok, I ordered 3 bowls of Bak Kut Teh for my breakfast. You actually believe it? Nah, I am just pulling your leg. This restaurant not only serves Bak Kut Teh but they serve various types of noodles.

What I like is the pan mee, both the soup and the dry pan mee. Ohh, before I forget, the pan mee only available from 7 am to 10 am. If you miss the window, too bad, you just need to wait for the next day.

Look nice leh. The fried anchovies and mushrooms are my favorite ingredient. The pan mee texture is slightly rubbery (not sure if I use the right expression) and nice to chew. I thought the dry pan mee is just the mixture of soy sauce and pan mee but of coz it is not that simple.

Don’t ask me how they were made but I think the dry pan mee is the perfect combination in term of taste, ingredient, portion and price too. Give it a try and I am sure you will crave for more.

If you are not a fan of dry stuffs, try this soup pan mee. I bet the ingredient is almost similar to dry pan except with soup of course. I don’t know what they include in the soup but it is refreshing and strong taste of stock.

MSG? I don’t know but I just love it. Normally I will dry the soup till the last drop. Hehe..This soup pan mee is actually comparable with KK Pan Mee @ Taman Usahawan, Kepong.

Oh this is new to me, having Penang Char Kuey Teow in Miri. Hehe. Why is it Penang Char Kuey Teow? I) it stated there Penang Char Kuey Teow in menu… duh (lame) ii) got lap cheong (Chinese sosej) and sea ham (cockles) iii) serve in banana leave.. hehe

I will not compare the taste with Kafe Heng Huat @ Lorong Selamat because on is literally in Penang and one is not. LOL but this is one of the most decent Penang Char Kuey Teow that I can manage to find in Miri.

If you are foreigner or tourist, don’t worry, you will not get slaughter here. All the pricelist is published on the wall. This restaurant not only serves Bak Kut Teh, Pan Mee, Char Kuey Teow but also cook ala carte dishes.

Look! I only pay RM 17.10 for this breakfast including drinks. Not so expensive afterall. That’s why you should try it too!

Sea Village Sea Food Restaurant

What is good about Miri? Beside the best cinema (the one and only cinema) with cockroach, all I can think of is cheap seafood. Ops.. I am just being sarcastic about the cinema but damn serious about the cheap seafood.  Almost every restaurant sells cheap seafood.

Have a think about it. If every restaurant sells seafood, which one is the best? There is no such thing as the best but I can direct you to a nice restaurant, Sea Village Sea Food Restaurant. The restaurant is located by the Miri river bank. If you are lucky, you will get to see the boat cruising through.

Now is the best time to visit this restaurant. Not so hot and not so cold at night.  This restaurant is an open air restaurant but of course you can dine in shaded place too.

If you look at the surrounding, you know that I am not aiming for fine dining but a fulfilling dinner instead. I only ordered 3 dishes here but I can tell you upfront that the portion is big. I mean really big. Don’t worry about the bills later as I have been to this place for ample of times and I am still coming back.

Although I preferred to be called meat eater, I ordered a simple stir fried vegetables to disguise myself. Nothing special about this dish.  In fact, this is another dish that I usual ordered to make myself more human. I mean omnivore and also to complete my balance diet. LOL

Now is the time for main dish (previous one is just side order.. hehe). I have ordered 1kg of Mongolian Style Crabs. Yes you heard me right, 1kg! Guess how much does it cost? RM 80? RM 50? Nah.. not so expensive. It only cost me about RM 20 for 1kg of crabs. Good deal isn’t it?

What is Mongolian style? Mongolian style means slightly sweet, spicy and creamy with black pepperish taste. If you like to eat the crab egg, you can request from the waiters to choose for female crabs (more chance to get the crab eggs but no gurantee).

Ohh, this place did not provide either small hammer or shell crusher. Either bring your own or use ur own teeth to bite. Try not ask from the waiter.  This is what happens when I asked from the waiter. He literally brought a big spoon for me. I asked, “Why are you bringing me the spoon?” he replied, “We don’t have small hammer, maybe you can use this to break the shell.” That really burst into my laughter. Breaking hard shell with spoon??

Another set of specialty here is the home fried chicken with salt-lime dip. The crispy chicken skins taste awesome when it serves straight from the frying pan. The downside is you can only order for whole bird. They don’t serve smaller portion than that.

Let me tell you, hungry TikkoSS can finish almost anything. One bird? It is never a big problem BUT it is a real problem when I have to finish the whole bird + 1kg of crabs + 1 vegetables + coconut drinks. I can tell you even my bottomless stomach faced some challenge at that time. If you follow my blog long enough, you know I don’t waste food that I ordered. So, did I finish it?

Ohh.. Absolutely. I felt abit bloated after completing this meal but hey, I felt very satisfied. Not to be disgusting here to post the empty plates but I took about 2.5 hours to complete this dinner. I can tell you, everyone looks at me in a very strange way.

I can sense that they were wondering what this man trying to proof. Order so much. I am sure some of them even betting if I can finish all. Well, if they did, they will be in great disappointment because I finished all the dishes as usual. It is a total SatisFATing.

How much did I pay? Only RM 50.40! Oh yea, this dinner is really cheap. That is why I said earlier, I will come back to this place again.

Tanjung Seafood Restaurant @ Miri, Sarawak

How do you feel when you skip blogging for few days? Normal? That is so not normal to me. How can I abandon my blog even for a single day? But, this is something that I have to deal with when I was in Miri recently.

If you want to go online, the hotel will charge you RM30 ++ for 1 hour or RM 60++ for one whole day. I might be desperately needed to connect to virtual world but I am not willing to pay for that amount. One month of streamyx only cost about RM88. Pardon me but I am not stupid or super damn rich.

I know many of you was wondering what happen to me in Miri, so I decided to leak a little information about what’s nice in Miri. Not sexy girl, not big bungalow but FOOD of course.

Calling for cheap seafood, how can it be compared with SEAFOOD in Tanjung Seafood Restaurant? Please don’t expect to be fully air-conditioned or high class restaurant but this is another typical Miri restaurant that might not look appealing from the outlook but I can tell you, there hidden gems beneath every dish.

If you seriously have no clue on what is good over here, try “Bilin”. Is a sorta green vegetables stir fried with red wine that only available in Miri or Sarawak (I think). Some of my friends told me you get this vegetable from Cameron Highland but I never see it myself YET.

Don’t worry! You won’t get drunk from the red wine. Hehe.

Ohh..I ordered kam heong cockles. As you can see, they removed half of the shells to make the portion looks bigger. Lol. I bet this is similar in most of the restaurants. It is called “Restaurant’s Optic Illusion”.

This dish is good but slightly spicy. Somehow I will not rank it as one of my favorites. Well, fat people are lazy and same goes to me. If they removed the shells completely, I will consider on putting this dish in my food wishlist :P

Ohh.. not knowing what else is good here, I decided to ask the ask the waiter to recommend. Let me quoted what she said, “You like to eat tofu? Guys normally like to eat tofu. We got very nice tofu here with some broccoli and mushroom. Feelling weird (try stop that tofu topic), I just said,”Ok. Give me one!”

When the dish is served, I thought this dish will definitely cost more than RM 50. Look at the ingredients. It has sea cucumber, abalone mushroom, big prawn, etc. All looks so expensive! I have strong feeling that I got slaughter this time. Maybe I look like a damn stupid tourist with my DSLR.

Not to “potong steam” while eating so, I decided to eat first, worry about the bill later. No doubt this dish is really good. No wonder the waiter said a lot of customer ordered this. (although I thought she is lying to me at that time.. where got people say their dish not nice, right?)

And the main highlight, Sweet and sour crabs. In Miri, you can easily order crabs dishes and you don’t need to wait for “CRAB Seasons”. They have variety of cooking style from spicy to sweet and sour, from local to international style and many more.

Normally I don’t eat crab when I am outside. To maintain my image and reputation maa but since I am alone, wth, just go for it. Ok! Please stop imagining how I look like while eating crab! Not to brag but I know I look good all the time. LOL.. puke..

One “must try” drink in Miri beside Kokoberry Bubble Milk Tea is 3 layer drinks. I know I wrote about 3 layer drinks in ABC Food’s Corner but this is totally different. The last layer is barley green (xiao mai chao) instead of coconut sugar.

Guess how much I paid for all these? Considering that I mentioned I might get slaughter? I only paid about RM48.30 for this meal. Cheap isn’t it? I bet you will not get the similar quality or portion in KL. If you happen to drop by Miri, go try it out. The restaurant is just right infront of Marriot Hotel.

Restoran Wah Tin @ Kepong

Someone asked me, “TikkoSS, you eat so much but how come your tummy still not inflated?” Er.. Honestly, I don’t know. It either my intestine did not absorb properly or I’m continuously feeding BIG HUNGRY WORMS in my stomach.

Knowing the facts that I love to eat and wanting to feed my tummy badly, my friend usually call me when they find out some nice or new restaurant. Not necessary high class restaurant, even simple roadside restaurant will do. This time they bring me to Restoran Wah Tin in Kepong.

I’m totally into sitting by roadside and have a nice dinner. Not romantic but with low lighting and carbon monoxide, I am sure it can add some flavor to it. If you’re more of a hygienic person, well, you can go to the air condition section but you will lose out the “environmental touch” then.

Sometime this restaurant is giving out pretty attractive deal. RM 5 for a bowl of sharkfin for instance or Big Crab for only RM12.  As you know, as sharkfin lover, how can I resist this temptation, right?

Not to grumble but a bowl of sharkfin just ain’t going to be enough for me. The waiter suggested steam egg with century eggs, stew Japanese tofu and green vegetables. Probably these are the few common dishes that they are good at.

No questions about it because they really good in preparing these “common dishes”. I wouldn’t be surprised if other restaurant also can also do the same. Personally, I enjoyed the stew Japanese Tofu. The way they prepare the tofu gravy tastes almost similar to sharkfin soup.  Yum yum !

Also, I have ordered my all time favorite, Cheong Jing Fish. The sauce is somewhat different from what I had in Restoran Taman Batu @ Jalan Kuching or Restoran Tai Dee @ Kepong. Different doesn’t mean it is not good. Just that this time the lards are visible. I know tasty food is never healthy but it is just hard to resist the lard + the Cheong Jing Sauce.

Lastly I ordered a pork dish. This one they served with man tou. I totally forget what is this dish called but if you just tell the waiter the Chiu Pai Pai Kuat (house specialty pork rib), I am pretty sure they know. This is totally a must try dishes.

We spent about RM 130 including drinks for a table for four. Will I come back again? For the sake of the Chiu Pai Pai Kuat, oh yea.. I will come back for sure.

Restoran Thaibase

You know, this race is actually pretty awesome. We were at Saudi Arabia a few hours ago. We flew back home to Malaysia. And now we are in Thailand. Heh.

Team RANDOM is now at Thaibase, Bandar Sri Damansara, enjoying a mouth-watering Thai meal. Ahh yes, everybody loves Thai food. You don’t love Thai food? Gee, you have no idea what you missed out my friend.

Thaibase is situated in a rather inner part of Bandar Sri Damansara. One may mistake this restaurant as a Chinese restaurant due to its rather oriental design. There is however, quite an abundant number of seats so doesn’t have to worry about overcrowding here.

We were served…

Fried Koay Tiaw. This is not just any tom dick harry Chinese ah beng char koay tiaw – it has a couple juicy prawns and it is not to oily nor too dry. Suitable for foodies who is VERY health-conscious.

Claypot Tofu.

A healthy combination of tofu, mushroom, prawns and come greens. The perfect meal for those who are on a strict diet.

And yes, fried rice.

Fried to perfection in terms of spiciness. Suitable for us hardcore Malaysians who can’t live without spicy food. So if you can’t stomach a plate of spicy fried rice, well, too bad.

That’s it! Off we go to the next stop.

Sate Kajang Hj. Samuri

Phew, finally our magic carpet brought us back to Malaysia. Back to Damansara Utama. Yes, we are having the famous Malaysian delicacy – Satay!

Or what the angmohs would call skewered meat. You know how much they fancy using fancy words.

So, Team RANDOM is now feasting at Sate Kajang Hj. Samuri. Contrary to popular beliefs, we are NOT at Kajang. We are at the Damansara Utama’s branch – one of Hj. Samuri’s 22 branches.

Housing a very simple restaurant layout and design, Sate Kajang Hj. Samuri appears to be like any other humble local Malay restaurant in Malaysia. Like my grandniece would usually tell me, never judge a book by its cover. And boy was she right.

We were served…

Sate Kambing, Rusa, Daging and Ayam.

In simple everyday English, we had lamb skewered meat, deer skewered meat, beef skewered meat and chicken skewered meat. The specialty of these skewered meats comes in the form of their tenderness. Unlike ordinary satays, the ones here in Sate Kajang Hj. Samuri is not overly burnt, not too chewy and not too hard.

There were ketupat as well – a type of cubed rice which are basically made from, oh well, rice.

Enough with skewered meat and rice! Off we go to the next destination!

Tarbush Sunway Pyramid

This race is definitely more exciting than the Amazing Race. We swear. The rushing adrenaline is enough to build another Twin Tower. Whatever that means.

Here we are, at our second location – Saudi Arabia. No kidding. We are at Tarbush Sunway Pyramid, which prides to be a replica of Saudi Arabia. There are camels everywhere, exotic sexy middle eastern waitress everywhere, flying carpets everywhere and of course, Aladdin.

Just kidding.

In all seriousness, Tarbush has a very authentic Arabian interior design. You remember watching Aladdin as a kid? Remember how the palace looked like? Yeap, Tarbush looks somewhat like that, just that it is air-conditioned here.

We were served…

What they would called the Baba Ghanoush. No, it has nothing to do whatsoever to do with Baba and Nyonya. It’s a sourish paste made from eggplant and tomatoes that is filled in slices of pita bread. Very very appetizing.

There’s also biryani chicken.

Tender chicken encompassed with spiced rice. Or what we typical Malaysians would call Nasi Briyani. Our team decided to wrap the rice and chicken with some pita and I tell you, it is the BEST combination.

Lastly, the dessert. Mahalabia. It sounds very majestic and grand, I know.

A type of milk pudding with a generous topping of nuts on the top. When you feed yourself with just one bite of this, it’s like heaven in your mouth.

Well, that’s it from Tarbush. We shall be flying off with our flying carpets to the next destination!

Strawberry Fields Cafe

As everyone know, Confucius once said “If you ain’t gonna nom nom that burget; Imma do it for you.” Yes, trust me, he said that. And he had also once said this during his visit to a humble café in PJ – “You should totally check out Strawberry Fields Cafe when you are in PJ.”

We, TEAM RANDOM are staunch Confucius followers. Yes, here we are at Strawberry Field Cafe in the Maxis Om Nom Nom race, having the most sumptuous meal of the hour. The venue is not that hard to locate, it is exactly next to the MBPJ building. The only problem that one might encounter during their visit here would be parking. Loads of shoplots but very the little parking lot. Typical Malaysian problem lah. But hey, we’re Malaysians, we can make a parking lot out of anything. Strawberry Field Café gives a very comfortable and homey feeling. We could almost fall asleep in our chairs. But you see, we couldn’t because we are like in a race and er, never mind.

We were served…

Sweet & Sour Chicken Rice. The chicken was deep fried to the right tenderness and the sauce was literally a combination of sweetness and sourness. Followed by Thai Fried Eggs with Minced Chicken.

Although this dish might appear to be a little spicy, but it is not up to the extent where we need to gulp in 1 gallon of water after every bite. Mystically enough, the egg makes a pretty good combination with the sauce and minced meat. Dessert. Sago Gula Melaka.

One word. AuthenticbonafideSupercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Yeah, not so sweet nor bitter. Ngam ngam. Stay tuned for our next post in a couple of minutes!

Mill Wheel Ice Cafe

How would you like it if I tell you I am going to camDUCK this time? I am sure my blog will temporary hang. It will either fill with a lot of cursing comments or too many visitors at the same time to stalk me. To avoid it, I rather opt to put pretty girls’ photos to gain traffic as what I mentioned in DiGi iPhone4 – Pimp My Music Party @ Velvet, Zouk KL.

Gosh, just realized that I am not any close to sexy at all and I don’t have pretty girls’ photos! So what I should do? Ah ha..I just got an enlightenment to increase the traffic. DESSERT! Oh yea.. girls like it, guys like it too? I know many can understand why girls like it but what about guys? Guys like it because they are smart creatures who just know where to find girls :P

Mill Wheel is the SHOP which serves nice desserts! Even the décor tells me that I am right. Their main target audiences are female. Cute cute décor, colorful color and modern like furniture. I am not sure if this is a perfect place for dating a girl but apparently a lot of couples visited there too!

What is good over here? There is a full wall menu for you to feed your FAT.. ranging from light bread to heavy platter. Cakes and ice creams are made available too.. If you think there is nothing great about this shop and it is just like another shop. I can tell you that you are so WRONG!

If you notice there are few newspaper article recommending this place. Certainly they serve good stuffs. Too bad I didn’t order any of the heavy meals this time as I reach this place at about 10 pm. So, I go for their famous snowflakes.

I have ordered lychee and chocolate ice, mango and watermelon ice and Greentea and lychee ice. I must admit that the presentation of the dessert is impressive. Small wok + many many colourful toppings. The topping just drive me nuts!

The ice is not the same as What is May King? It shredded the ice to become very thin and smooth. Totally have no idea how they do it. Well, I just know how to eat.. hahaha.. The mango and lychee is my favorite of all. The Green tea tastes a bit bitter like usual and the chocolate just tastes like chocolate :P . Somehow I find the watermelon one is very special.

Ohh, I must have forgotten to let u know that this is also another blogger short meet up. Simon, Vince, TikkoSS(me), and Xing manage to make it on time. All are equally efficient that we only take about 10 min to firm up a decision to meet up at this place, 1/2 hour before the place close.  Great job to all!

I obviously cannot finish 3 bowls of snowflakes considering the potion is really huge but the price relatively cheaper than I thought. One bowl only cost about RM9.90. you can try if you are around the corner and bring your partner with you too !
