Fine Dining

TikkoSS on April 15th, 2012

If you read my post on Shangri-la Pudong, Shanghai, you will probably realize that I have a lot of nostalgic moments in this hotel.

Nothing can embrace my memories except carving the good one on stones and not so good one on sands so that the waves can help to flush them away.

Another way to do it, is to feed my stomach well first and start reflecting later. One way to do it is by ordering decent dinner just for myself in my own quiet room.

The trick is, you have to either order food that you crave for or food that you love. This time I go for potatoes wedges and salad as starter. Now, I can sense that my memory puzzles start to align on its own.

To speed up my thought process, I have to go for wanton noodles soup with mushroom and char siew. As a pork lover, I have to say char siew really helps in merging my brain cells together.

At this stage, I felt like as if I already travelled back through time to meet with my loves one, my family, probably about 20 years back.

To avoid myself from waking up from this hypnotic moment, I have to continue feeding my stomach with Sirloin Steak and strawberry milkshake. Or stomach growling will definitely creates distractions.

I recalled, my dad gave me my first present, my mom and sis too. How mesmerizing. I remembered we used to have a lot of fun time together and thanks to decent food, it helps to blend a good chemistry between my present and past.

The sweet moment was really short and I woke up straight away after I got slapped with the dinner bill. It costs me RMB 495?? That is approximately RM 250???

After this meal, I have to probably eat instant noodles for another week. Worth it or not, why not you tell me.?

Money is not everything. Money cannot buy love, health and happiness. That is what many advice me. To me, money might not be everything but money is definitely something.

If you don’t have money, how can you buy roses for your love one on valentine? Without money, who is going to pay for hospital bills and how are you going to buy iPhone to cheer up yourself?

Let me show you what I do with my money. Nowadays, with money, you can do just about anything. And that includes becoming an Emperor for few minutes.

I am not talking about wearing the emperor costume for photo shoot. All I am saying is to experience a lavish spread of imperial Chinese cuisines in Fangshan Restaurant, Beijing.

As soon as you enter the main entrance, you get to experience a truly unique ambiance and real ancient décor signifying numerous ruling Chinese dynasties in the past.

The dining hall is adorned with beautiful royal painting on the ceiling and even traditional Chinese art. Of course you are greeted with waitresses wearing original imperial dresses.

Gold and yellow used to be the Emperor’s color. If you are spotted using those colors, you will probably behead instantly but that was long long ago. The historic setting with yellow and gold in dining hall surely add the imperial effect into it.

As far as food is concerned, you get to experience truly sumptuous dishes as long as you are willing to pay the bill. As for me, I go for the set of RMB 298/per person (~RM 150). If you are richer, there are also set of RMB 2880/person (~RM 1440).

What I get as a start are Appetizing Cold Dish, Mashed Peas Pudding and Rolls of Kidney Bean Flour, Stir-fried Scallops and Brocolli and Ginseng Red Date and Deer Tendon Soup.

Despite the place is very congested, I personally give 9/10 to the waitresses as the services are pretty efficient. As soon as I almost finish my dishes, they instantly served me with new one.

This time I get Braised Sea Cucumber with Quail Eggs, Braised Camel’s Paw with Scallion, Sautéed Prawns with Spicy Garlic Sauce, Deep-fried Duck Rolls and Pork Rolls. Yes, you got it right! CAMEL PAW!

I must say I get to savor the authentic flavors of former imperial’s meals. Some of it might look exotic to me but hey, no harm to give it a try right? Besides, this is the finest dining you will ever get.

On top of what they served earlier, here are the remaining from the menu, Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish, Sautéed Vegetables with Mushrooms, Sesame Cakes with Minced Meat, Assorted Palace Dim Sum and Mixed Fruits.

If you have some spare time, try to visit the “Imperial’s Toilet”. I must say, now I know where the emperors did his big and small business.

The bills cost me about RMB 952. It might appear to be slightly on the expensive side but it is definitely an experience that is worth trying. Money is not everything? Think again!

Hello, can I call for room service? Ok.. What service do you want, sir? We provide all kind of services to our customers including some special one.

I am curious about the special one but let’s not get there. This is a typical type of conversation you will have when you call front desk in hotel. Nothing special about it.

Try again if either of you do not speak English. The conversation will become as challenging as what Chinese said, like chicken and duck speak.

Believe it or not, a simple mushroom soup will turn out to be the most difficult soup to order. If the soup turns out to be tasteless, the effort just goes to drain. Luckily, it did not happen to me this time.

By right, most menus should be numbered. It simplifies the communication between the guest and the hotel when in urgent need. When come to this, pictorial menu is completely useless.

Imagine how I ordered Sirloin Steak with Tiger Prawns and Fries, medium rare? The waitress for sure is patient and polite but probably in her mind, she will say this “What the F*** are you talking about?”

In normal circumstances, I will order a soup, main course, desserts and a drink. Now, the conversation is not only testing her patience but mine too.

The Banana Fritter and ice cream is one of the tough one. I know how to describe banana and ice cream but definitely not fritter in foreign language. I nearly fainted when I ordered strawberry milkshake and turned out to be orange juice.

All the hard works did paid off when the dinner was finally sent to my room but 30 minutes late. This is really a milestone for me and in fact one of my biggest fear in foreign places. Imagine if they sent “something special” and not food!

How do you feel when someone walks to you and say, “You are blogger, right? I follow your blog!”. If you feel contented because someone actually treasures your masterpiece, I would say you are on the right track.

If you blog to gain fames, money, freebies or knowing hot chicks, I would say that is an insult to the word “blogging”. You are not going to go far, young man. Speaking of which, the word blogger does not carry much of a weight, isn’t it?

This is a marathon and not a sprint. You have to cultivate the passion in blogging rather than just do it. All those I mentioned are merely bonus if you get it :P

BUT if you blog to get free FOOD, I would say, hell yea…stomach comes first! Never put free meals on second place. That is a crime and your FAT is not going to like you!

I bet many of you know about NuffnangMY Sharing Session. This is a session where many bloggers get together to share their experiences in blogging. Frames is the venue this time. What a minute, I just been to this place recently with other bloggers when we organized Nom with Blogger at FRAMES!

So yea.. this place is not new to me..

Ya ya ya.. I know there are many hot chicks and sexy hunks there. Ops.. for some reasons I cannot take away my eyes from all those cute girls there.. Slap ! Come on.. just give me a 5 sec break will ya?

These are the bunch of people that I hang out with for almost 3 hours of my life. Regret? Definitely NONO. They might be small potatoes like me but they are super funny and happening. A myth believes that if you consistently hang out with happy people, you will get younger.

That is exactly what I feel now. YOUNGER ! hehe..

After comfortably mingle around the crowd, Nuffies gave some opening remarks. Nice speeches by the way. I don’t know about many but I feel motivated and excited about the event even before it starts.

Every time Nuffies will have “special” arrangement to surprise us. So far, I never catch anyone playing with their phones or falling asleep YET. It never happens before and I am sure it will not happen in future too.

This time round, our ice breaking session is called “magic wand”.  Bloggers have to hold the stick and start to tell others about themselves. No introvert that we encountered in this session and surprisingly, everyone is able to share freely.

If I have a magic wand, I want every famous bloggers to pimp me so that I will get famous too. Yea..that is exactly what I said. Lame isn’t it? Haha.. but what if it comes true.. I bet I will be the happiest man on earth. Contradict with what I said earlier.. ? neh.. that is just a wish afterall right..

Now comes my favorite part of the sharing session. FOOD! We were served with restaurant specialties ranging from spaghetti, chicken, beef, fish and seafood. What a perfect combination I would say. The portion might be small for big eater like me but it is the quality that matters NOT the quantity, right?

Pictures tell a thousand calories. I know all dishes look deliciously tempting but can you STOP DROOLING? Many will surely ask if the food is good? Will I recommend people to go? I will say YES to both!

YES YES! You know them right? I get a chance to know really really really famous bloggers such as TeyCindy, XiaXue, Ringo and Audrey in real person. Am I dreaming? Pinch me.. Ouch.. I am not dreaming! Too bad, all of them are girls coz I am GAY virtually :(

For some reason, I can sense that guy in yellow shirt forget to eat his medication. He turned into extremely wild and CUTE TikkoSS in almost every picture with his signature TikkoSS’s Pose.

Beside the really really really famous bloggers, I also have a chance to snap many many many photos with fellow Nuffies. They might be hiding behind the screen all these while but if you know them in person, they are much more happening than you thought!

Oh yea.. all of them are not photo shy and man.. they can really pose too!

These are the evidence of TikkoSS in action with all hot chicks. Hey.. I am not pervert k? Technically I am gay virtually (need to reemphasize) Hehe..

I don’t think camwhore with my ugly, fat and short physical will help to boost my blog traffic. For sure people will puke big time!  That is why I just need some girls touch here. :)

Of all the photos I took on that night, I realized that I love these three in particular. I am not talking about the photography skills here but more of our facial expression! Genuinely attractive and innocent, right ? Like Like

Finally, before we left the venue and chit chatting with each other, we managed to get some group photos. Personally, this photo doesn’t look good. Why? Because TikkoSS is not there! The photo only priceless if TikkoSS  is in it.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed this sharing session very much. Not to mention, I have learned a lot of blogging tips from super duper famous bloggers too :P .. I am a young dino now but soon going to be monster! Scare leh! Thank you NuffnangMY for the invitation.

Please come back before 12 am or you will turn into pumpkin. That is like an epic curfew line you normally hear from fairytales. The truth is, your dad will call you every 5 min after 11pm until you get home? Did I get that?

My mom said, “Son, how come you always stay at home. Go out and meet some friends.  If don’t have money, let me know..”  So, without procrastinating, I accepted a date with not one girl but a bunch of girls. AND guy too of course.

Where about? We travel all the way to pyramid for dinner with my private jets. Ok. Maybe I am a bit over exaggerating. We travel to Sunway Pyramid by CAR for dinner in FRAMES.

Nice place? Oh yea. There are indeed a lot of nicely decorated frames there. Lucky enough all the tables are well set awaiting for our arrival.  Sounds grand right? Of course, I am out with bloggers and we have ethics and standard. Lol.

This is my 101 times hanging out with bloggers this year. So, mom no longer asks me to go out anymore. However she started to ask me if I will be back for dinner almost everyday? (that is another new version of curfew.. but I pretend I don’t know).

I can tell you there are almost 20 ++ interesting bloggers over there. They might not be as famous as Kenny Sia or Xia Xue but all of them are great people. At least in my eyes, else, why I want to hang out with them right? AND for some reason I feel younger despite I AM YOUNG now.

Hmm..I know you are going to say .. the food looks so delicious. Yes.. I don’t deny my cam cam skills are acceptable. So, is the food quality good? Personally, I did not try all of it so I do not want to give bias decision here.

Why we chose the place? We all purchased RM29.90 worth voucher just for dining in Frames. Is it a good deal? Absolutely! With RM 29.90, you get 2 Ice lemon tea, 2 person meals AND free RM 50 voucher per purchase of the voucher (for next visit).

You have the options of choosing spaghetti or burger set for your main course. Of course they are smart enough not to let you choose 2 spaghettis at the same time. So if you bring your gf with you. Be gentleman and let her choose first.

Or if you are smart enough, be like me. I purchased a voucher and I didn’t bring any dates. So you get to eat BOTH! Okok. I know it sounds a bit sad, I get it! :P

But hey.. who cares it is sad or not, as long as my tummy is super happy. Imagine ur tummy get the best of both worlds. I’m not talking about fat over here but the satisfaction.. :) Well, I am not as selfish as you think. I do share out my beloved fish burgers to other bloggers too ok?

I am not fancy on ice lemon tea whether it tastes better if you buy it yourself or it is free but I am totally into strawberry milkshake. My favorite all time drink that never disappoint me.

If you noticed, I did not comment much about food here. Why? Because my main focus here is spending time with all those chicks and handsome dude out there.. Damn the guy in circle looks super awesome and handsomely attractive. Wonder who is him?

Join us next time and we, bloggers love to meet up with new people. Ops corrections! Some people :P

How fast can you plan a special birthday surprise? Guys, please take noted. I am going to give some tips here. 1 year? 1 month? All those are just too long, ok! Your girl probably already gets married with kids if you take like a year for instance.

All u need is less than a week or I would say few minutes if really in desperate mode. Now, I’m not desperate. So, I took less than a week to plan a successfully birthday surprise that makes the birthday boy nearly cry in tears and wet his pants.

Tips #1: Location – besides you need to be creative, fast thinker and have good managing skills, you also need a good location to start with. I chose Brotzeit in Midvalley. Why?  Honestly I don’t know but somehow I got to know that the birthday boy loves this place. TikkoSS’s instinct I called it.. scoff!

The ambience is super awesome for a date of two or in group. Smokers? Don’t fret! Brotzeit allocated a smoking section just for you, smokers with natural aircond too!  So if you decided to shorten your life, just join the crowd.

Tips #2: Happening Crowds – How can you form a birthday surprise if only 2 persons. Bored, right? I look at you, you look at me? But who to invite? My personally recommendation is bloggers preferably because they are super fun, super sporting, super cooperative to hang out with.  Trust me I know better than you. If you cannot get bloggers, call me 1-800-TikkoSS.

Owh..nearly forget. You need an insider too, preferably your friend’s girlfriend, girlfriend’s sister or girlfriend’s mouse bla bla bla. In this case I got Evelyn to help me to cover-up the surprises and betray his boyfriend, Bernard.

Tip #3: FOOD – Honestly, food is a must must. Always remember hungry man is an angry man! Not only food. It must be real good food. I am not here to tell you what I ordered. If you want, you have to print the blog post and show to the waiter (*part of the effort to promote TikkoSS’s blog)

All I can say is I love all the food posted here especially the shrimp and the pork rib! Also my camera skills. Fuhh.. not bad huh?

Tip #4: FOOD again! – Why food again? Food need to be enough. Not repeated menu for sure. This is to ensure that your crowd is fed well with quality food (Actually I just love my foodie photos..) .

If you think that you don’t have good camera skills and need few hours to take one picture, DON’T take it. You are not only drive ANGRY man angrier, but people might already finish the dinner after u took those pictures.

Tip #4: Drink – As much as I want to say alcohol drinks are pre-requisite, other attractive drinks will do too.  Sometime few cups of beers will automatically transform the atmosphere from super dull to super crazy.

Owh.. I tried the cranberry juice for that night. There it goes, my virgin experience. Love it I would say. Now I have options between ice lemon tea and cranberry juice rather than continuously ordering the same drink all the time.

Tip #5: Desserts – If you have girls in the crowd, never forget desserts. It is a crime and girls hate it when you forget. They will start cursing you forever. All the unreasonable words will come out somehow. For example, you are not sensitive, not caring, bastard, do u love me more or your mouse more and etc.

Don’t ever attempt that and I am dead serious! Else it will ruin everything in split second.

Tip #6: Birthday Cake – I know many will said, of course birthday cake is a must laa.. How can it consider as a tip? Well simple. If only have one cake then it is not a tip but if with two cakes is can be considered as a tip. Why do you need two when you only have one birthday boy.

Duh, one is to have fun and the other one also to have fun la. Eat? That is after. Lol. This time is a glitch because we only get one, so ended up we need to eat his saliva and his oily face that stick on the cake when attempted to remove the candle.

Tip #7: Group Photos – This is nothing really but I think it is nice to have.  At least we have the evidence to see who sneak out earlier, who is crazy enough to go to library and study after that and last but not least, to see how decent we are in front of camera.

Those tips might be debatable but I successfully organized a surprise birthday party for Birthday Boy, Bernard with fellow bloggers. Happy Birthday, Bernard! And thanks all for for awesome night!

Chakri Palace is an official residence of the Kings of Thailand from 18th century onwards except the present King, King Bhumibol Adulyadej who resides at the Chitralada Palace.

What’s so great about it? Malaysia also has its very own Chakri Palace. Not the King’s Residence but Royal Thai Cuisine instead. Don’t expect to see any royal family but be prepared for a wonderful food here.

When you step in this restaurant, you will feel like you are crossing the border to our neighbor country, Thailand. If you haven’t seen the traditional Thai costume before, this is the right place.

Lost in translation? This is not a problem at all. Fluent Malay and English speaking waitress will provide you with good service.

What I usually order here? Considering that I have big appetite and limitless stomach, I ordered Pineapple Fried Rice, Seafood Tom Yum soup, Butter Egg Prawn and Gung Mae Num Phad (cashew nut prawn).

All prawn dishes? That is just a coincidence. Tom Yum is a dish that need not further explain. The clear and spicy soup is a good starter. If you are not a big eater, the big prawn can already fill half of your stomach.

Pineapple Fried Rice is really served with BIG pineapple. I am not sure if they include spices but the rice smell and taste good.

The buttery flavored prawn is very special in the way they prepared. Although the dish is slightly soaked in oil, I didn’t know that the combination of egg + butter can taste so yummie. Fattening? Er.. no one ask you to drink the oil right??

Last dish, Gung Mae Num Phad is so so only. Maybe because I already had enough of prawns but I remembered that the gravy + rice taste good too but I only try a spoon.

Yea yea yea.. now is the dessert time. Must try dessert? Definitely! Ai Tim Tab Tim Krob (Coconut Water Chesnut) and mango sticky rice can never go wrong. Actually sticky rice is just sticky rice but if sticky rice with coconut milk and mango, WOW, I love it.

Now comes the sad moment, the wallet bleeding time. I spent about RM 124 for this meal. Cheap? Expensive? I will let you decide if this place is worth spending for a nice dinner.

Hey, I am hungry! Let’s go and eat? Where?? Anywhere.  What do you plan to eat? Anything. That is a typical conversation that I encounter almost every time when my stomach is paging.. growl growl..

This time I need not worry about it. A few bloggers invited me to Jogoya – Japanese Buffet Restaurant @ Starhill KL. Over here, you can get a broad range of cuisines ranging from Japanese, Chinese, Western, Malaysian and a lot of other styles.

If you are thinking of dieting, forget about it ! The diverse choices of dishes, the freshness of food and the delicate desserts will convince you to eat MORE and MORE.

On top of that, the highest quality and PORK FREE dishes are simply irresistible.

Don’t drool when you see this? I said it because I nearly drool when I spotted on sushi and sashimi. They serve free flow of Salmon, Tuna, Mackeral, Squid, Octopus, Butter Fish, Oyster and Abalone etc.

Sometime the queue can be a little long but I can assure you that it is worth waiting. If you are a fan of sushi, you will find many weird choices of sushi here too. !

Seafood lovers? You don’t need to go to smelly WET market or diving in deep blue sea now. You are free to order crab, prawn, fish, shell fish and many more. All you need to do is just picking a big plate and start selecting.

The seafood are Pre-cook? Nah.. The seafood will only be cooked when you order it. This is to maintain the freshness and quality of the dishes. So, you have a say on how you want it to be done.

Like I said earlier, this restaurant also serves Chinese and Western style dishes. Sharkfin soup is a must but I also spotted dim sum and herbal soup. Not only that, there are too many Chinese vege and meat dishes for me to choose from.

Don’t know which one to choose? Don’t decide too fast ! Western corner serves Spaghetti, steak, lamb chop and many more..  hahaha.. now you are confuse on what to eat right? That is exactly what I have in mind at that time.

I am sure you are interested in what I ordered. This time I will not tell you how I like the food but will let you decide instead. How? Some say picture represents a thousand words.. hehe..

Sashimi is a must ! Sushi is a must too but it ended up in my stomach before I even take out my camera (so no photos) :P . Osyter and scallop are also part of my starter. The crab is a disguise. I didn’t eat it but Xing did.

How to maximize your cash out with food input when you come to buffet? I didn’t eat breakfast, lunch, dinner SINCE yesterday and clean your digestive system.. hahaha.. I am just kidding lol. I’m not that cheapskate,ok?

Let’s see, got lobster, scallops, sea cucumber, crab, abalone, some fish, lamb etc. I bet the question that playing in your head is, do I have diarrhea the next day? The answer is NO.

Personally, I wouldn’t say that all the food is nice but that is normal isn’t it? I like some and don’t like some. I particularly favor the cheesy scallop and the LOBSTER!

Did you see 2 pretty girls there? I mean they look good from that angle. Dark, blocked by hair.. wait wait wait.. Who are they? I don’t know.. hehe .. what I am trying to say is they have to earn their drinks. KNOCK THE COCONUT.

That is really new to me. I literally need to take a hammer and knock a hole before I get to drink it. I drank 5 coconuts in total. Not because I like it but I like the knocking part. Hehe..

Am I full yet? I must say, I still have some space for desserts. I have tried choco fondue (never play with it before :P ) , puddings, mochi mochi, cupcakes and the highlight was HAARGEN-DAZS.

Without hesitating, I committed to finish few scoops of ice-cream, 8 scoops in total :P . Only one word to describe.. AWESOME !

Did I mention that I was out with Bloggers? With who? I was with few famous bloggers of course, Ysquare, Jackie LoiJessicatXing and Chuen.  After we finished the dinner, we camwhoring and camDUCKING a little :P

I have a great great fun and nice nice dinner with fellow bloggers. Thanks ALL for making this happen.

Last but not least, someone managed to candid TikkoSS while feeding his FAT. Hehe.. Actually he is just a small eater, right (as you can see)? Don’t know why people have impression that he eats a lot..

Do you believe if I travel all the way to western part of Java, Indonesia merely for an exquisite dinner? NO? Of course NOT.  Well, if I am a billionaire, why not? BUT sadly I am not.

You don’t need to fly to Indonesia but spend a few bucks on taxi to KLCC instead for fine dining in House of Sudanese Food. The place I called the heaven of Indonesian food.

This is not the first time that I visited this restaurant. The cozy modern Indonesian décor and table arrangement make this place outshines others for a wonderful lunch or dinner.

What attracts me to revisit this restaurant is Emping (Buah Belinjau in Malay term), fried local fruit cracker.   The taste is slightly milky and bitter but the dip lime sambal (chili) sauce revitalizes the taste of this appetizer.

This restaurant serves famous Sudanese “Dancing” fish. So, with no hesitation, this dish is a must. This dish tastes as good as the food presentation. Although the fish is deep fried, the flesh is still juicy.

The waitress recommended Sudanese Chicken Rendang. From the look, it is nothing special but the thick gravy is full with the richness taste of spices. Yummie!

Many called me carnivore. So, I decided to order Fried Kailan to balance up my diet. Honestly, I don’t know how to appreciate this dish as it tasted green only :P

Cumi-cumi bakar (Charcoal grilled squid with sweet sauce) is another dish that attracts me. Why? The dish name sounds so cute. At first, I wonder what is so special about this dish? But after the first bite, I am like WOW.. I just want more…

Ice kacang is my favorite but Sudanese Ice Kacang? I never try before. So, I decided to go for it. It serves with cendol, peanuts, longan, cincau, corn, rose syrup, milk etc. The combination of them make this dessert marvelous.

It is always satisfying to start a meal with slightly bitter, Emping to excite your taste bud before trying out others and end with sweet dessert, Sudanese Ice Kacang . I am very satisfied with this dinner and only spend about RM 105 for two.  Great deal isn’t it?

Sakura or cherry blossom is the flower of cherry trees which are indigenous to East Asia countries including Japan, Korea and China.

Yea, I know you are familiar with Sakura especially in Japan but we also have Sakura in Malaysia. Sakura flower in Malaysia?

Nah.. I meant Sakura Café and Cuisine. A halal café serving local Malaysian food founded in 1977.  Let me be direct to you, parking will be a big challenge at this place – in Jalan Imbi.

Smokers? No worrries. The café is split into smoking and non-smoking zone but of course non smokers get to enjoy the cozy and romantic air-conditioned ambience.

What the specialties here? Honestly, I don’t know.

After spying at what many have eaten, I ordered Braised Shark Fin Soup as appetizer, King Prawn Noodle, Salted Egg Crab(s) and Nasi Bojari as main course and a Coconut drink.

3 main course? Shhhh.. that is the secret of maintaining my big and comfy tummy. (It is believed that many love pillow rather than hard bricks – 6pack)

Personally, my spying works well. All dishes I ordered taste really delicious. Wait a minutes, I tried better Nasi Bojari elsewhere. The chicken slightly over-fried but the prawn and the beef tastes spicily sweet :) .

The salted egg crab and king prawn noodles are nicely done. The salted egg crab taste better with a few dips of chili sauce and the big prawn is really BIG. More importantly, the king prawn noodles is the taste that I’m always craving for.

The shark fin soup, this one taste better than most Chinese restaurant or I should say different style of preparing. A little vinegar makes the taste even better. I will come back again for the sharkfin soup (poor shark :( )

Although pillow is good, there is a price to pay. This time, I spent about RM 119.35 to maintain my tummy from shouting for food. So, be prepared if you dream of a tummy like mine.
